[hard drive] SATA Backward compatibility

I have a quick question. I installed a 500GB SATA II hard drive in one of my clients file server. It's an older model PowerEdge SC400 tower server. The on-board SATA controller is SATA-150. I plugged the drive in and the bios sees it but does not reconize it as a hard drive, says unknown device. Are SATA II drives backwards compatible with SATA-150 controllers?
